What Is Podiatrist?

A podiatrist, also known as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), is a medical specialist focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions affecting the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg.

Podiatrists are licensed physicians who complete medical training, a doctoral program in podiatric medicine, and national and state board exams.

Foot disorders are among the most widespread and neglected health problems affecting people in this country.

Typically, podiatrists:

  • Consult with the patient and other physicians on how to prevent foot problems.
  • Diagnose and treat tumors, ulcers, fractures, skin and nail diseases, and deformities.
  • Perform surgeries to correct or remedy such problems as bunions, claw toes, fractures, hammertoes, infections, ruptured Achilles, and other ligaments and tendons.
  • Prescribe therapies and perform diagnostic procedures such as ultrasound and lab tests.
  • Treat conditions such as bone disorders, bunions, corns, calluses, cysts, heel spurs, infections, ingrown nails, and plantar fasciitis.
  • We will evaluate for the need of custom orthotics, braces, or prosthetics and order and prescribe for them.
